John's Sketchbook - Entry 1

The theme for my sketchbook is "passage." This could refer to many things. For instance:
  • a section of written work
  • a rite of passage
  • a portion of musical work
  • the act of passing from one place or condition to another
  • freedom to pass
  • a journey
  • a channel or opening
  • or any number of interpretations from your perspective!
I was inspired to capture some of my time in Prague and elected to remember modes of passage, things seen, placed visited, and inspirations borrowed...

  1. John, I'm so excited to see your opening piece - and I love it! I totally envision you sitting on that plane contemplating on your time in Prague - those clouds not being just clouds but also comics thinking bubbles - i like the ticket one a lot but I especially like the two cut out from some notes of yours ... I'm also digging those "food bombs" dropped down from the plane! The piece has a great rhythm, movement and a story ... and I bet Jennifer will be excited to get this as your airplane geek buddy...

  2. Thanks, Petr! You may be interested to know that the clouds that look like notes are actually from a map drawn on the back of a card by a stranger who was helping us find Ichnusa on Plaska. And yes, there's quite a bit here for an airplane geek to love...

  3. I only now spotted Vojtech Preissig as one of your tags - he's one of my top gurus in visual communication

  4. The CSA logo is from his font which I love and have been freehanding in another sketchbook.
